Two US Capitol Police officers have been suspended and at least 10 more are under investigation for the deadly pro-Trump uprising last week, a congressman said on Monday.
Deputy Tim Ryan, D-Ohio, who chairs one of the committees that oversee the federal law enforcement agency, told reporters that one of the officers was suspended immediately for appearing to take a selfie with members of the crowd.
Another police officer was suspended after being seen wearing a Make American Great Again cap and directing people into the building, Ryan said.
Ryan did not identify the officers. During Zoom’s call, Ryan said he believed a police officer had been arrested, but a spokesman later clarified that the congressman had spoken badly. There were no arrests, the spokesman said.
Ryan said another 10-15 police officers are being investigated, although he cannot provide details on the extent of those investigations.
“The bottom line is that the Capitol police are looking at everyone involved who could have facilitated it on a large or small level,” he said.
A department spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The apparent arrest and suspensions came days after department head Steven Sund announced his resignation for the January 6 events, and amid intense scrutiny over the department’s response to the Capitol crowd attack.
Five people died during the attack, including Capitol policeman Brian Sicknick, who was reportedly beaten with a fire extinguisher.
