What to expect from Samsung’s Galaxy S21 event

Samsung’s next Unpacked event will start on January 14 at 10am ET, and thanks to many leaks, we have a good idea of what to expect from the big day.

Samsung is expected to announce its next line of flagship phones, which are likely to be called S21, S21 Plus and S21 Ultra. It is rumored that the S21 Ultra has top-of-the-line specs and cameras and, for the first time for a Galaxy S model phone, support for Samsung’s S Pen. The S21 and S21 Plus are expected to have similar specifications, but differ in size.

A new set of true wireless headsets, the Galaxy Buds Pro, and a Tile item tracker, the Galaxy SmartTag, also look like a lock. Rumors about the two products hit the web recently and each appeared in a pre-sale ad that was leaked for the S21 Ultra. And, of course, Samsung may surprise us with things we don’t know about yet.

Here is the summary of what we think we know so far.

Samsung’s Galaxy S21 Ultra will support the S Pen

Let’s talk about Ultra’s flagship first. The big news of the S21 Ultra is the support for the S Pen, as confirmed by the files of the Federal Communications Commission. However, there are rumors that the stylus is an optional accessory, and there are no rumors that the phone has a dedicated slot to store it, unlike the company’s Note series. WinFuture posted images of an optional case that allows you to store the S Pen, however, so that it can be a useful accessory to help you not lose the pen. WinFuture also reports that the S Pen will cost just under € 40, which translates to just under $ 49.

As for the cameras, the Ultra will apparently have four rear cameras, including 3X and 10X telephoto cameras, according to WinFuture. The two telephoto cameras are also expected to have optical image stabilization and 10 megapixel resolution. The phone may also feature Samsung’s 100X “Space Zoom” feature, which debuted on the Galaxy S20, reports Android Police.

The other two rear cameras are rumored to be a 108-megapixel wide-angle camera and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera, and the selfie camera can be 40 megapixels. The phone may also have laser-assisted autofocus, something that was included in last year’s Galaxy Note 20 Ultra.

You can take a closer look at the rumors of the Ultra camera setup in this marketing image that leaked from the Evan Blass leaker:

The Ultra should also have a 6.8 inch WQHD + (3200 x 1440) resolution screen, according to WinFuture. It is also expected to support an adaptive refresh rate of 120 Hz, and Universe ice spill says the S21 Ultra may be able to run at full WQHD + resolution with a 120 Hz refresh rate, something that the S20 Ultra couldn’t do.

There are also rumors that the S21 Ultra supports 5G networks, is IP68 certified for water and dust resistance, has a 5,000 mAh battery and comes with 128 GB, 256 GB or 512 GB of storage.

The Galaxy S21 and S21 Plus will offer similar specifications in different sizes

Samsung also plans to announce the Samsung S21 and S21 Plus, which will not have specifications as powerful as the Ultra.

The most obvious difference between the S21 and the S21 Plus is a smaller camera module. The two phones are expected to have a 12-megapixel wide-angle camera, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera and a 64-megapixel telephoto lens, reports WinFuture. And both phones will have a 10 megapixel selfie camera.

Here’s a better look at the cameras on the S21, thanks to another marketing rendering that leaked from Blass:

As for screens, the standard S21 is expected to have a 6.2-inch screen with FHD + resolution (2400 x 1080), while the S21 Plus is rumored to have a 6.7-inch screen with FHD + resolution (2400 x 1080). x 1080). Both should support a 120 Hz refresh rate screen, although it is apparently not an adaptive refresh rate, according to Android Police.

Like Ultra, the S21 and S21 Plus are expected to support 5G networks and be certified by IP68. They must also be offered with 128 GB or 256 GB of storage. And depending on the model you buy, they will have different battery sizes: the smaller S21 has a 4,000 mAh battery, while the S21 Plus must have a 4,800 mAh battery.

There are rumors that each phone has a different back cover material. The S21 may have a plastic back, while the S21 Plus may have a glass back, according to WinFuture.

The S21 line may not include a power charger in the box

Samsung’s newest phones may follow Apple’s suggestion by not including a charger in the box, according to WinFutureReports from S21, S21 Plus and S21 Ultra. And the company recently excluded ads mocking Apple for not including a charger in the iPhone 12 line, crediting rumors that Samsung will make a similar move.

While the decision may be good for the environment, remember that if you are considering buying an S21, you may also need to consider purchasing a separate charging pad to keep up with it.

New phones can run Samsung’s One UI 3.1

Samsung’s S21 line can run One UI 3.1, and a video from YouTuber Jimmy is Promo reveals some of the features that may come in the new update.

The video, which apparently demonstrates the One UI 3.1 running on the S21 Ultra, shows a way to record from the front and rear cameras simultaneously, some of the S Pen features that work on the S21 Ultra, backgrounds for the call screen, the ability to select the video resolution on the video recording screen and more.

In addition to its S21 phone series, there are many rumors that Samsung will announce a new set of real wireless headsets called Galaxy Buds Pro. They were not just revealed as a pre-order gift for the S21 Ultra in a leak rendering shared by Blass, but YouTuber Digital Slang has already posted a practical video and comparisons with AirPods Pro and Samsung’s Galaxy Buds Live in bean format.

The new headphones are rumored to have active noise cancellation, an eight-hour battery (up to 28 hours with the charging case) and an IPX7 water / sweat rating. You can see how Galaxy Buds Pro compares to some of Samsung’s other true wireless headsets in this leaked spec sheet from WalkingCat. Galaxy Buds Pro can cost $ 199, making them a more affordable alternative to Apple’s $ 249 AirPods Pro.

Samsung may launch its block-like item tracker, called the Galaxy SmartTag

Samsung’s new Tile-like Galaxy SmartTag will apparently use Bluetooth to connect with devices and share its location. The label itself appears to be a small square with rounded corners and a handle at the top to facilitate fixing things, as shown in photos posted on the Taiwanese telecommunications regulator’s website and shared by 91mobiles. The design in the photos also corresponds to a SmartTag image on the leaked ad pre-order bonus for the S21 Ultra.

It seems likely that SmartTags will work with Samsung’s new SmartThings Find app, which allows you to track the location of your Galaxy devices, similarly to Apple’s Find My app.
