Western Digital doubles the storage on its portable SSDs to 4 TB

Western Digital is doubling the maximum storage size of several of its portable SSDs to 4 TB. Previously, Western Digital’s SSD line reached a maximum of 2 TB.

The 4 TB storage configuration will be available under Western Digital’s My Passport and WD_Black black brands, along with the Extreme series from its subsidiary SanDisk. All products will also include a five-year warranty.

Starting at $ 680, Western Digital’s My Passport SSD, which received a model update last August, promises read speeds of up to 1050 MB / s and write speeds of 1000 MB / s.

Western Digital’s Black P50 Game Drive SSD 4TB configuration will cost $ 750 and includes read and write transfer speeds of up to 2,000 MB / s. This external SSD is compatible with PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation and Xbox consoles.

But beware, buyer: if you are thinking of buying this as an external SSD to supplement storage on your PS5 or Xbox Series X / S, there are some caveats. It can connect to PS5, but you can only store PS4 games. And while it works on the Xbox Series X / S, this game drive is not compatible with the next generation console’s SSD expansion output to make the most of next generation hardware. Currently, the only SSD that takes full advantage of the X / S Series hardware is the Seagate expansion card, which comes with just 1 TB.

Both SanDisk Extreme and Extreme Pro received a model update last September.

The 4 TB configuration of the SanDisk Extreme will cost $ 700 and promises transfer speeds of up to 1050 MB / s read and 1000 MB / s write. An even faster option, the 4TB Extreme Pro, will cost $ 900 and offer read and write transfer speeds of up to 2,000 MB / s.

Western Digital says that all of these products are due to be launched “later this quarter” on its website and on Western Digital’s website.
