The latest TV firmware update from Vizio is packed with features and improvements for people playing on a PS5, Xbox Series X or PC with the Nvidia RTX 3080 (or any Gvid Sync-ready Nvidia GPU). It is currently being implemented in the company’s OLED sets, as well as in the 2021 collection of Quantum X and Quantum P Series models – all with HDMI 2.1 ports.
Dividing by platform, Vizio says the update “allows full bandwidth from 4K to 120fps” for PlayStation 5. The PS5 does not yet offer native support for variable refresh rate.
This is not the case if you have a PC with something powerful like the Nvidia RTX 3080. This firmware allows 4K resolution at a refresh rate of 120 Hz when connected to your device, along with support for the variable refresh rate for 4K / 60 Hz and 4K / 120Hz settings. The last addition means that you shouldn’t notice the screen jumping or tearing if your PC suddenly drops its frames per second; the display will automatically scale your refresh rate to what your machine is currently capable of.
This update bodes well for Xbox Series X owners as well. It improves support for variable refresh rate for the admittedly small amount of game content that currently supports 4K resolution at 120Hz refresh rate. Still, it is very good news for the future.
Leaving aside platform-specific notes, Vizio brought some notable tweaks to these TVs in the firmware update. It adds discrete IR codes to each HDMI port, making them easier to register with HDMI-CEC products. Vizio has also improved compatibility with AV receivers that support HDMI. The company has included some other quality of life features that you can check out below.
