COLOMBIA, SC (WRDW / WAGT) – South Carolina Governor Hency McMaster is sending help to young students who are learning at home and with their parents.
Many families face the challenge of staying at home because some schools are not fully open – and some parents cannot afford childcare.
To help, the governor is dedicating $ 5 million from his educational emergency aid fund to SC’s First Steps.
It offers free 4-year-old kindergarten programs in more than 200 daycare centers in the state of Palmetto.
The money will also expand current facilities so that they can help more children.
“It’s one thing to go to work and know that you have someone to look after your children while you’re at work, which is good, but it’s also another thing to know that you have them where they are safe, where they get the tools from. learning they need, ”said single mother Dorothy Love.
SC First Steps helps more than 2,000 low-income families across the state.
Now it is recruiting more families and suppliers, thanks to the new funds.
