The executive order takes effect on February 19 – almost a month after Trump was replaced by President-elect Joe Biden.
The request says: “The United States has assessed that a number of Chinese connected software applications automatically capture large areas of information for millions of users in the United States, including confidential personally identifiable information and private information, which would allow access by the PRC and from CCP to Americans’ personal and proprietary information. “
The applications in question affected by this order are Alipay, CamScanner, QQ Wallet, SHAREit, Tencent QQ, VMate, WeChat Pay and WPS Office.
During his tenure, Trump went after a series of Chinese tech giants, with TikTok and WeChat previously threatened with ban.
