The USCP did not specify the cause of Liebengood’s death. He was 51 years old.
Lawmakers immediately issued statements mourning his death and asked for additional support for United States Capitol police in the wake of Wednesday’s riot that left five people dead and dozens of injured police officers.
“Our officers need more than gratitude,” tweeted Rep. Dean Phillips (D-Minn.). “They need authentic and capable leadership and significant support, and I invite my colleagues to join me in demanding this immediately.”
Liebengood’s death comes days after the USCP announced the death of officer Brian Sicknick, who was killed after confronting the crowd of protesters who invaded the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday. The US Capitol is flying its flags at half-mast in honor of Sicknick, which the White House has so far refused to do.
