NEWBERRY – Timothy Beaudoin, of the Newberry City Fire Department, graduated from the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation at the South Carolina Fire Academy in South Carolina (school for eight-week firefighter candidates in Columbia) on December 4.
Beaudoin, along with 21 other recruits, underwent a 320-hour classroom training program and the development of practical firefighting skills. The keynote speaker was Chief William Broscious, Columbia Fire Department.
“This challenging program requires commitment, passion and dedication,” said Fire Academy superintendent Dennis Ray. and tests written to meet National Fire Protection Association standards. ”
Comprehensive training, offered quarterly at the Fire Academy, includes training in emergency first aid, training in hazardous materials operations, automatic clearance, fire fighting with flammable liquids and gas, rescue training and firefighter levels I and II of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).
In addition, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, changes were made to the class structure and facilities to promote social detachment and recommended precautions.
“With the successful completion and graduation of these new firefighters, who will now be dedicating their lives to serving their communities and the state, our fire service in South Carolina is enhanced,” said Ray. “I am proud of their achievements and also I commend the dedicated Fire Academy instructors who led the recruits through those weeks of instruction that led to graduation. ”

The Fire Academy offers emergency service training for the municipal fire service – paid and voluntary – airport rescue departments, industrial fire brigades and emergency teams and service organizations, including EMS, police and military from across the state and the world. The Fire Academy is accredited by the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress and the National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications (Pro Board) for various NFPA firefighter levels.
The Fire Academy and the State Fire Department Office form the Fire and Human Life Safety Division, which is a division of the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation of SC.
