The National Society of Film Critics on Saturday called Nomadland as your best photo of 2020.
Nomadland’s Chloe Zhao achieved the victory of best director, while Frances McDormand won the best actress for her performance in the dramatic film that explores the life of a nomadic woman who lives in the American West.
Elsewhere in the acting categories, Delroy Lindo was recognized for his performance in Spike Lee’s war drama 5 Bloods. Supporting actor wins were awarded to Maria Bakalova for Borat Subsequent Moviefilm and Paul Raci for Metal sound. The best script was for Eliza Rittman by First cow.
Founded in 1966 by Joe Morgenstern and based in New York, the NSFC is comprised of more than 60 publishing film critics, including The New Yorker, The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, Wall Street Newspaper, The Christian Science Monitor and NPR.
Critic Justin Chang, who serves as chairman of the board, tweeted the winners and runners-up live through the official @NatSocFilmCrix Twitter account.
This year marked the 55th annual voting meeting, which took place practically in the midst of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Typically, meetings are held at the Film Society of Lincoln Center in New York.
In previous years, Bong Joon Ho’s class discrimination drama Parasite and Chloe Zhao’s western drama The pilot were honored by the NSFC.
