The Nationals has a one-year deal with Kyle Schwarber pending a physical examination, a source confirmed to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com. The club has yet to confirm the deal.
Schwarber adds strength to the squad around Juan Soto, who Nacional has already addressed twice this off-season, with the addition of Josh Bell via switch in late December.
Schwarber was not signed by the Cubs this off-season after six seasons with the club.
With National League teams working under the assumption that there will be no designated universal hitter this year, Schwarber would play his normal left field position. This probably means that Soto would play on the right field – his position among the Minors. Soto played on the left field in his debut, because Bryce Harper was the team’s right fielder, and remained in position when Harper left for the Phillies. Coach Dave Martinez started Soto on the right field for the first time in the Majors in the last six games of the 2020 regular season.
Schwarber has -29 outs above average in the left field since 2017, the second smallest in the position behind only Matt Kemp (-32).
