Google is promoting a “more personalized experience” on a revised Meet home page for Workspace customers that offers three precise options for creating a new meeting.
Clicking the dark green “New meeting” button on the left side of meet.google.com will present three options:
- Create a meeting for later: Generate membership information for a new meeting. You can save this information for later use.
- Start an instant meeting: Join a meeting with one click, without having to go to the Meet green room first. Once in the meeting, you can add others or copy the participation information to share.
- Schedule on Google Calendar: Go to the Calendar in a new tab to create an event with the Meet conference details automatically populated.
The most notable addition is the “instant meeting”, where users don’t even need to specify the name of the meeting. Google warns that “your camera and microphone will be turned on automatically”. In the meantime, the other two options are useful for short-term meetings and those more distant. A field for entering an existing meeting code or nickname appears next to the button.
These changes are now available in the Google Meet experience available to free users. They are now expanding to Google Workspace customers who currently have only a single “Join or start a meeting” button. In this new design, the schedule of upcoming appointments will still be available on the right side of the screen.
The new Google Meet home page will launch in the coming weeks for Workspace customers, although those in the Essentials layer will not see the Calendar Schedule option:
Google Workspace Business Starter, Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Essentials, Enterprise Standard and Enterprise Plus, as well as a client of G Suite Basic, Business, Education, Enterprise for Education and non-profit organizations
