Foldable smartphones have gotten much better in the past year, especially looking at Samsung’s portfolio. However, it is no secret that these devices still have many obstacles to overcome before they are really ready for the mass market. This week, as the end of winter raises its ugly head, some Samsung folders are having trouble with the cold.
As highlighted by SamMobile, some users in South Korea have noticed that their Galaxy Z Flips and Galaxy Folds are breaking. On January 8, the same day as temperatures in the country plummeted to -18 ° C (just under 0 ° F), two Samsung folding owners reported that their screens had broken as a result of the cold weather. There may be other factors at play, but these users say the problem was simply opening their phones in the cold.
Notably, this is also not without precedent. Last winter, reports emerged that cold weather played an important role in damaging the original Galaxy Z Flip and the original Moto Razr. I also noticed a slight increase in users with broken screens on the subreddit r / GalaxyFold since the onset of cold weather, although this may just be a coincidence.
Obviously, something needs to be done to improve reliability during extreme cold for folding, otherwise many people will not even be able to consider them. In the meantime, it will be interesting to see how Samsung handles this damage. The company’s “Premiere Service” warranty is support for providing easy replacements, but real-life examples have shown otherwise, even in the most common scenarios. Someone coming to Samsung saying “my screen broke because it was super cold” may not end very well …
