A new effort to recall California Governor Gavin Newsom has attracted more than 1 million signatures, with 9 weeks left to collect the remaining 500,000 needed to put the measure to the vote.
Overall, the effort needs about 1.5 million people to sign by mid-March, which would trigger an election mid-year.
“People are being heard loud and clear, and it is not a matter of IF we are going to achieve our necessary goal that will trigger a Newsom recall election, it is only when we cross the finish line,” Orrin Heatlie, the Proponent main official RecallGavin2020.com said in a statement.
Randy Economy, a senior consultant on the official Gavin Newsom 2020 recall campaign, previously told Fox News that the campaign hoped to reach the threshold required for the measure to be voted on in mid-January by the end of January.
Economy said the “grassroots” effort is non-partisan and includes supporters of Senator Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., And fans of President Trump.
A spokesman for the Newsom office did not respond to Fox News’s request for comment.

California’s recall initiatives are not uncommon – although they rarely make it to the polls.
However, people may be particularly unhappy with Newsom, who has faced criticism for a series of recent events, including for violating his own strict restrictions on the coronavirus when he attended an indoor dinner last year. Participants in the expensive restaurant meeting were seated nearby and did not wear masks.
The Governor of California apologized for the incident, considering it a “serious mistake”.
Newsom also recently recognized that the launch of the coronavirus vaccine in the Golden State is not occurring as quickly as expected, while confirmed virus cases are on the rise. Many states faced similar challenges in the distribution of vaccines.

The economy has suggested that supporters of the movement believe that the governor mismanaged the coronavirus situation, adding that many small business owners in the state – such as restaurants and boutiques – have completely lost their livelihoods, while large stores, like Target, have been allowed to remain open.
Newsom “put corporate interests before the people of California,” said Economy.
Gray Davis, who was recalled in 2003, was the first rescued governor in the United States since 1921. Davis was eventually replaced by Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger.
