South Carolina football now needs an offensive coordinator.
News began to surface yesterday that Auburn’s head coach Bryan Harsin was trying to attract Gamecock’s offensive coordinator, Mike Bobo from South Carolina. This morning, the Football Scoop confirmed that the Tigers will sign Bobo for the same position. on the plains, and will also take Gamecocks offensive line coach Will Friend.
Bobo had just signed a two-year, $ 1.2 million contract to remain on the South Carolina team earlier this week, while Friend was one of the first offensive signings of the Shane Beamer era. Now, both are gone, which means Gamecocks will now need to assemble their offensive team after they appear to be complete.
Bobo was with the Gamecocks for a season, where he helped Kevin Harris of South Carolina lead the SEC in the race. He took over as interim coach after Will Muschamp’s resignation, but went 0-3 in the team’s last three matches.
Bobo’s departure leaves a big gap in the South Carolina technical team, as the Gamecocks are now looking for an offensive and defensive coordinator. Any progress made by the attack has been halted, and the team will be forced to learn a new manual for the second time in two seasons.
Bobo also has an extremely close relationship with five-star quarterback Gunner Stockton, who is the only commit in the 2022 recruiting class in South Carolina. It remains to be seen whether he will reopen his recruitment or stay with the Gamecocks.
Will Friend becomes a package with Bobo, as the two worked together on several stops. When Bobo took over as Colorado State coach, Friend was his first signing for the attack. The two also trained side by side in Georgia. Friend joined the Carolina team two weeks ago.
The search for offensive coaching in Columbia is now set to rise again. Time will tell the direction Shane Beamer decides to take.
