Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is putting the PS5 to work with incredible new weapons, including new ways to make each weapon look unique with detailed tactile feedback.
We talked to Insomniac Games about their next PS5 exclusive series for our latest Big in 2021 feature, and you can’t talk about Ratchet & Clank without talking about its variety of cartoon firearms. Game director Mike Daly told us how DualSense gives the team “powerful new tools to take each weapon’s unique personality even further.”
“Adaptive triggers not only provide us with another channel to make weapons look unique, in some cases they allow extra functionality,” explained Daly. “Partially pulling the trigger or blurring gives us a way to add nuances to the weapon’s functions that simply weren’t possible before the trigger itself couldn’t provide feedback. Our Burst pistol, for example, can be fired with precision by pulling the trigger up to a medium limit or you can pull to do everything at the cost of accuracy.
“It is much more intuitive to have this secondary function directly on the trigger than for players to learn different buttons for it, it is much easier for you to get into the flow of combat and execute advanced strategies without having to think about the controls.”
As another example, Insomniac found that players still do well at tracking tactile feedback, even though there’s a lot going on on the screen at the same time (which is quite normal for the frantic combat of the Ratchet series), so it’s perfect for indicating when slower weapons are ready to fire again. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is still scheduled to launch in the first half of this year, so keep your DualSense charged until then.
