Gamecocks hit another transfer defender

South Carolina football wins the transfer defender’s commitment.

Earlier today, Gamecocks got a deal from former Georgia Southern Eagles cornerback David Spaulding. A few hours later, Shane Beamer knew he would receive more help in defending the ball, as Delaware linebacker Darryl Williams announced his intention to transfer to the South Carolina football program.

Williams offers depth in a Carolina linebacker room that has been losing its best defender in the past two seasons. A member of the 2020 class, he has yet to set foot on the University of Delaware football field.

Leaving high school, Williams was considered the 113th best internal linebacker, according to 247 Sports, as well as the best prospect in the state of Delaware. The Smyrna native, DE, chose Blue Hens over offerings from Coastal Carolina, Kent State, Massachusetts and Old Dominion. He also received interest from Maryland and West Virginia.

Gamecocks were thin in the linebacker position in 2020, as the team dealt with a series of injuries to top contributors. Outside defenders Sherrod Greene and Jahmar Brown played just one game per play, while team captain Ernest Jones was left out of the final two games with a sprained ankle.

Williams could have the opportunity to compete immediately, with Ernest Jones for the NFL. The only other internal linebackers on the list at the moment are Mohamed Kaba and Rosendo Louis Jr.

Williams, who goes by the nickname ‘Debo’, recorded 153 tackles in his senior year of high school, scoring 29 tackles for loss and seven sacks. He led his team to two state titles.

Williams becomes the fifth transfer of the class, joining Georgia Tech wing Ahmarean Brown, Georgia Southern corner David Spaulding and defenders Isaiah Norris and Marcellas Dial from Georgia Military.
