FORT LEE – A soldier stationed in Fort Lee died of complications from COVID-19, the post announced Wednesday night.
Sgt. First Class Lisa Maria Soto was 38 years old. She died on January 2 at the John Randolph Medical Center in Hopewell, according to a statement released by the Fort Lee public relations office. The statement did not say how she contracted the virus.
It is the second death reported by Fort Lee since the pandemic began last March. A civilian official died of the virus last April.
According to the statement, Soto has been in the Army for 20 years. The Florence, South Carolina native has been in Fort Lee since 2017 and was last assigned to the 244th Quartermaster Battalion’s Alpha Company. She was an advanced individual training instructor here.
Soto was deployed twice, once in 2004 in Iraq and again in 2011 in Afghanistan. It also has missions in the United States and Europe.
Fort Lee said that Soto was a highly decorated soldier, with six medals of Good Conduct, five Army Achievement medals and three Army Commendation medals, in addition to deployments and battle campaigns.
