Philadelphia Rivers coach Doc Rivers told reporters Wednesday he believes that “democracy will prevail” after aThe Donald Trump crowd reached the United States Capitol building during Joe Biden’s election certification.

“It is very disturbing, obviously. Sad. But what is not is that I keep hearing that this is an attack on democracy. It is not. Democracy will prevail. It always prevails,” Rivers said. “… I’ll say it because I don’t think a lot of people want it. Can you imagine today, if all those were blacks invading the Capitol, and what would have happened? This, for me, is a photo that is worth a thousand words to all of us see. “

Hundreds of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol on Wednesday when Congress met to certify Biden’s election, interrupting the process and forcing those in the building into safe areas. An armed clash took place outside the House, and the crowd later took over the Senate floor, with at least one intruder pictured on the dais where Vice President Mike Pence was trying to certify the election results earlier in the day.

The acts of violence came just hours after Trump appeared at a “Save America” event, in which he continued to perpetuate the lie that the 2020 presidential election was stolen in Biden’s name. The rally and subsequent overtaking of the Capitol comes amid months when Trump undermined the integrity of the election, spreading lies and refusing to concede his loss to the president-elect.

Rivers and the Sixers are expected to play in Philadelphia against the Washington Wizards on Wednesday night.
