‘I switched from keto to a whole food diet to maintain my weight’

My name is Kyla (@thegalaxxygoddess) and I’m 30 years old. I’m from Saskatchewan, Canada, and I work in office administration. After realizing that my weight was holding me back, I started following a ketone diet and practicing intermittent fasting and, in time, I lost 50 pounds.

I started to put on weight quickly after moving to a new city and starting college. I wasn’t making balanced food decisions and gradually started to eat worse and worse over the years. I also lived a sedentary life. I got carried away by fast food and sugar to the max and made worse food choices when I was stressed.

At 24, I reached my heaviest weight of 150 kilos. I was beginning to feel pain and tiredness, which was not normal for me. But, as I gained weight over time, it was not obvious to me that my weight was the reason I was not feeling well. I was also beginning to have knee pain quite regularly. It really drew my attention to my weight, and I knew I needed to start working on my health and lead a less sedentary lifestyle.

So, during the holidays in September 2014, I had problems with the amount of walking we were doing. I had to take breaks while we were walking – it was not the way I wanted to live. So I made my first attempt to lose weight and lost 22 kilos in 2015. However, my weight loss didn’t catch on.

My * real * turning point came this year, in July 2020.

At 30, I was getting tired of my own apologies. The pandemic really made me see how I was living and what I wanted to change.

In July 2020, I chose to follow the keto route and intermittent fasting after doing a lot of research. For me, this combination worked perfectly.

I never intended to practice keto in the long run (I couldn’t run out of bananas!). However, it helped to suppress my sugar cravings, which was my main problem. Now I’m out of sugar, in addition to natural fruit sugars.

Now I have adjusted my way of eating, leaving the ketone diet to simply focus on eating whole foods. This is a better way of eating for the long term for me, because I don’t want to be without certain healthy fruits and grains, but I am very grateful for the keto, as it started my weight loss.

Fasting really helped me to have a diet and allows me to be less restrictive when I eat.

The eating window that I usually stay at is from 12 pm to 6 pm or 7 pm. The food has less control over me now. It’s really only food, neither good nor bad. I’m not obsessed with that anymore.

Here’s what I eat in a day now.

Breakfast: Fasting (water and coffee only)

  • Lunch: Chicken or eggs with garlic butter and cauliflower rice
  • Snacks: Pistachios, almonds or berries
  • Dinner: Taco Salad (ground beef, cheese and vegetables)
  • Dessert: Coconut with almond milk or a mug cake

In order to exercise, I started walking a lot during the week at the beginning, and continued this for most of my journey to lose weight.

I also added it to the Bowflex Treadclimber machine a few times a week. Now I am starting to work on weight training more regularly, as I have low nutrition.

I’ve never been overregistered with an exercise schedule. But now I am focusing on moving more into my daily life whenever possible and resting when necessary.

These three changes made the biggest difference to my weight loss results.

    • I added a lot more water to my daily routine. I’m sure that I was chronically dehydrated for a few years – I felt really bad for not drinking enough water. So now I try to drink two coffees, two 30-ounce waters and two or three green teas a day. It seems to be the perfect amount for me. Staying well hydrated naturally left me a little less hungry.

      • I started tracking my food in a diary. I started tracking my food in a diary when I started keto. This helped me to understand the amount of food I ate in the portion, until I learned the right amount for me. It was a very useful tool at first, because it made me feel more responsible for myself and my goals.

        • I changed one thing at a time. It was easier for me to make small changes that ended up fitting like a puzzle. It took me more years than many, but the changes were significant and taught me a lot. When losing weight, it is easy to become extremely overwhelmed with all the new information and adjustments. But if you break it down and learn piece by piece, it’s less scary. For example, if you drink a lot of soda, try cutting it down for a few weeks and then moving on to the next change. They all add up.

Overall, I lost 105 pounds. It took me about five years of trial and error.

I had to keep winning and losing to really find out what worked for me. But I feel like I’ve found the balance I need. I feel really amazing when I enter my 30s. I feel more myself, which has been the greatest gift of weight loss.

This journey to lose weight was honestly a renaissance for me. It’s changing my life in more ways than one, and I’m excited just to experience my life completely now, since before I knew it wasn’t. I was just existing. I was governed by my emotions and food. It doesn’t really have to be that way. Now I know that I am in control of my life path more than I ever imagined – and I will not give up on myself.
