NFL Draft 2021: ESPN Mel Kiper explains what the Jets should do with Sam Darnold and choice # 2

For the New York Jets, the NFL’s 2021 Draft is actually quite simple. Do they stay with quarterback Sam Darnold and build around him, or do they shut down Darnold and recruit a quarterback, with the most likely candidate being Ohio Fields from Ohio?

ESPN NFL Draft Analyst Mel Kiper Jr. explained what the Jets should do during a performance on Tuesday, “Stand up.”

The only quarterback who would have forced Sam Darnold to be traded was Trevor Lawrence and Trevor is going to Jacksonville first. Second, it won’t be Justin Fields, in my opinion. Will be Penei Sewell or a trade. O Cincinnati Bengals choose No. 5, they need Penei Sewell on the left tackle to protect Joe Burrow. Encourage them to move up to number 2 and move forward with Sam Darnold.

Sam Darnold left USC that last year, I said in August that I would make Sam not have a great year. He had lost many of those important weapons around him on the offensive side of the ball. And with the Jets, he didn’t have that either. But he showed when he was there in enough games last year and this year to know that he has a chance to be a starting defender in the NFL.

So if I’m the Jets, Sam is the guy and the second choice probably ends with the Bengals and Penei Sewell, or the Jets just catch Penei Sewell, and Mekhi Becton and Penei Sewell helping Sam Darnold. So, anyway, you can’t lose if you are the Jets, choosing Sewell. Sewell is the guy in second place, whether it’s the Jets or the Bengals.

At a media meeting on Tuesday at Zoom, Jets general manager Joe Douglas did not commit to staying with Darnold. “Look, we have a lot of decisions to make,” said Douglas, according to ESPN. “I think Sam is going to be a great defender. I am excited to bring a head coach here and go through our process. “
