Undoing star Noma Dumezweni joins the cast of the live action adaptation of The Little Mermaid

Noma Dumezweni got a mysterious role in Disney’s upcoming live action movie, The Little Mermaid.

The British actress, who most recently starred as Hugh Grant’s lawyer in the hit HBO series The Undoing, will play a new character who was not in the classic animated film.

For the new adaptation, Halle Bailey takes on the role of Ariel, the mermaid princess who dreams of being human, alongside Melissa McCarthy as her evil aunt Ursula and Javier Bardem as King Triton.

The Little Mermaid will be directed by Rob Marshall, who is best known for directing the film version of the Broadway Chicago musical (2002). He ended up winning six Oscars, including Best Picture.

In another impulse of experience, David Magee wrote the script – he is the man behind acclaimed films like Finding Neverland (2004) and Life Of Pi (2012).

This new film version will feature the original songs written by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, as well as new melodies with music by Menken and lyrics by Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Miranda and Marshall will also produce together with Marc Platt and John DeLuca.

Jessica Virtue and Allison Erlikhman are overseeing the studio, according to Deadline.

Opposite Ariel de Bailey will be Jonah Hauer-King as Eric, a prince Ariel falls in love with after saving him from drowning, while he becomes determined to find her.

Some of the voice roles include Daveed Diggs as Sebastian, a loyal crab and King Triton’s trusted servant who cares for Ariel; Awkwafina as Scuttle, Ariel’s diver bird friend; and Jacob Tremblay plays the noble tropical fish Sole.

Dumezweni, 51, is also well known for originating the role of Hermione Granger in the West End and on Broadway, in Harry Potter and the cursed son. Her performance earned her the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Supporting Actress and a nomination for Tony for Best Actress in a Play.

She also caught the attention of many people with her role as a therapist for Paul Mescal in the adaptation of the Hulu series of Normal People (2020) and as Miss Penny Farthing in Marshall’s fantasy film, Mary Poppins Returns (2018).
