Cleveland Browns left tackle Jedrick Wills Jr. and wide receiver Rashard Higgins were cited for the drag race on Tuesday morning.
“We are aware of the incident, we will gather more information and deal with it properly,” said a team spokesman.
The citation took place in Westlake, Ohio, 10 miles from the Browns’ practice facilities.
According to the service report released by Westlake police, the two were stopped just before 9:30 am Eastern time and each paid $ 124 tickets. The police also conducted a probable cause search on one of the vehicles for a suspected marijuana, according to the report. The police did not specify which vehicle had the alleged articulation and neither Higgins nor Willis were cited for that.
The police did not specify the speed of each of the two.
Cleveland players were off on Tuesday.
Wills, the tenth overall choice in the 2020 NFL draft, started everyone except a left tackle game for the Browns this season.
Higgins emerged as a key target for quarterback Baker Mayfield at the end of the season.
On Tuesday night, Higgins posted on Twitter that his “foot slipped” in relation to the drag race quote before deleting the tweet. He also posted that “he was trying to get away from Covid”, before deleting the tweet too.
Wills wrote on Twitter that people were “overreacting”.
The Browns were hit with more problems at COVID-19 on Tuesday, when coach Kevin Stefanski, wide receiver KhaDarel Hodge and Pro Bowl guard Joel Bitonio tested positive for the virus, eliminating them from Sunday’s playoff game at Pittsburgh Steelers.
