Wolf’s comments followed a tumultuous legislative session during which the Republican Senate majority prevented Democratic Senator Jim Brewster from sitting in his fourth term, despite defeating his Republican opponent by a narrow margin.
“Republicans in Pennsylvania and across the country have spread disinformation and used it to subvert the democratic process,” Wolf said in a statement that accused Senate Republicans of ignoring voters’ will. “This is a shameful takeover that disgraces the institution.”
The Pennsylvania GOP largely wired the move earlier this week. A leading Senate Republican said the dispute between Brewster and the Republican Party contender for the 45th District, Nicole Ziccarelli, was still being reviewed.
“I think it is right to give them [senators] a little time to review before asking them to make any decisions in this case, ”President Pro Tempore Jake Corman told reporters on Monday, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
According to reports, Ziccarelli’s numerous legal challenges were dismissed in court.
Despite Brewster’s certified victory, Pennsylvania Senate Republicans blocked his seat on Tuesday. In a bold move, the majority of the Republican Party also voted to remove state Democratic lieutenant governor John Fetterman from the session, according to several reports.
A spokesman for Pennsylvania Senate Republicans did not respond to a request for comment.
