Fans excited to see Wonder Woman in action again in the film Wonder Woman 1984 – starring Gal Gadot and directed by Patty Jenkins – apparently he was not willing to pay for it. The new film, which opened on December 25, fell 67% in its second weekend in American theaters. The movies opening weekend reached $ 36.1 million, with the world total at $ 118.5 million so far.
The huge drop in Wonder Woman’s earnings can be attributed to a number of factors, including theaters being closed due to the pandemic; fans watching the movie on HBO Max (at no extra cost to your subscribers); and the film receiving not-so-stellar reviews from fans sharing their opinions on social media.
The drop in profits from the film can also be attributed to the release date of Wonder Woman in 1984. The film was originally set for June 2020, then august, then octoberand finally, in December on Christmas Day. Most comic book films don’t open on Christmas Day.
It is also unclear how much HBO Max had an impact on the film’s final revenue. Fans who were unable to see 1984 Wonder Woman in theaters due to concerns about the pandemic, tuned in to the movie on HBO Max. If they were already subscribers, they could see Wonder Woman at no extra cost.
And then there are the reviews from critics and fans. The Rotten Tomatoes rating of Wonder Woman in 1984 is 61% of critics and 74% of fans.
This is much lower than the original 2017 Wonder Woman movie, which has a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 93% of critics and 84% of fans. This is unexpected, considering the critics’ first reactions to Wonder Woman in 1984 were positive.
In addition, fans turned to social media on the film’s release date to express disappointment with the 1984 Wonder Woman. That negative word of mouth may also have contributed to the film’s box office performance less than stellar.
Regardless, this news of the sharp drop in numbers from its second weekend is not good news for DC Comics or Warner Bros.
