It has already been kind of confirmed that the next Galaxy S21 Ultra would support the S Pen, but we were unsure of the implementation. Since the S21 Ultra will not have a Note-like slot to house the stylus, the solution was not expected to be particularly elegant. Unfortunately, this is exactly the case. A new leak shows us how Samsung wants you to keep the optional S Pen, reminding us of one of its latest budget tablets.
AS Pen itself is your usual barrel-shaped pen and is very reminiscent of the Samsung that comes with the Tab S7. It is said to be pressure sensitive, using a Wacom digitizer, and can be used as a remote control for your presentations and camera shutter. In addition, it supports all types of aerial gestures using the accelerometer on board. We understand that all of these wireless functions require battery power, but it is unclear how exactly this S Pen should charge.
But we know how you should carry it. It turns out that one of the flip covers for the S21 family that we saw last week will have a slot to insert the S Pen. Samsung has clearly taken a page from its own book here and redirected a design choice that might work on budget tablets to its flagship flagship for 2021. Using the S21 Ultra stylus also means that you will have to put up with that case extra wide too, unless some third party manufacturers come up with a smarter solution.
Unlike Note phones, the S21 Ultra does not come with the S Pen in the box; Samsung plans to sell it as an optional accessory for € 40, or about $ 50 in direct conversion. The company could offer phone and pen packages (complete with an original box), but no price details for any of them were shared in this leak. We’ll know that next week, when Samsung is ready to unveil its 2021 smartphone line.
