Shooting victims in Kenosha seek $ 20 million in city damage, police: report

An injured man and the family of a protester who died after being shot by Kyle Rittenhouse during demonstrations in Kenosha over the summer are now asking for $ 20 million in damages to the city of Wisconsin, his county and legal authorities.

Gaige Grosskreutz, 26, and Anthony Huber’s parents announced their intention to sue recently issued complaint notices, which normally precede lawsuits against local governments, reported the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

“We believe there was some level of negligence on the part of the city and the county,” Grosskreutz’s lawyer, Kimberly Motley, told the newspaper.

Joseph Rosenbaum, also a protester, was also killed in the shooting.

KENOSHA PREPARATION FOR PROTESTS BEFORE JACOB BLAKE’S CHARGING DECISION

Both notifications, which were obtained by the WTMJ, claim that “Kyle Rittenhouse, an out-of-state minor, illegally armed with an assault rifle, was authorized – by the Kenosha Police and the Kenosha Sheriff’s Department – to roam the streets. , threatening several civilians and finally shooting three people. ”

Grosskreutz’s document states that he “suffered significant permanent physical damage, pain and suffering, loss of income and future gains” after the August 25 shooting.

“Mr. Grosskreutz was in Kenosha with the aim of providing basic medical assistance to people who were out that night protesting the murder of Jacob Blake,” he also says. “There was no justification for Gaige to be shot at close range by Kyle Rittenhouse.”

The document written on behalf of Huber ‘s parents says he “lost his life to protect innocent civilians” and they, in turn, “suffered damage in their own name, including the loss of their son’ s company”.

“After Rittenhouse had already shot and killed a person, Anthony selflessly tried to disarm him and killed himself,” he adds.

RITTENHOUSE TO BE JUDGED ON KENOSHA SHOOTING COUNTS

Both documents were issued against “the city of Kenosha, Kenosha County, the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department, Chief of Police [Daniel] Miskinis, sheriff [David] Beth, and still unknown or former employees “of the city and its law enforcement – and each seeks $ 10 million in compensation.

Rittenhouse, a 17-year-old from Antioch, Illinois, was charged in August with several counts in the fatal shootings of Rosenbaum and Huber and in the injury to Grosskreutz, including intentional and reckless homicide, danger and minor possession of a firearm.

Rittenhouse was released from prison in November after paying $ 2 million bail and a judge ruled in December that he will be tried.

He told police that he was attacked while guarding a company and that he shot self-defense during demonstrations and civil unrest that broke out in Kenosha after the police shooting at Jacob Blake, a local black man.

Meanwhile, the city of Kenosha is gearing up for protests when an indictment comes to the officers involved in the Blake incident, officials said on Sunday. A decision is expected in the next two weeks.

Security efforts will include the designation of a demonstration space, limitations on the city’s bus routes, road closures, curfews and protective fences, Mayor John Antaramian and Police Chief Miskinis said in a press release.

Blake was shot in the back seven times on August 23 after moving away from a white police officer and two others who were trying to arrest him. The officer, Rusten Sheskey, shot Blake after he opened the driver’s door of an SUV and leaned into the vehicle. Blake was paralyzed from the waist down.

The shooting was captured on video and quickly broadcast online, fueling massive protests in Kenosha that caused millions of dollars in damage to public and private property.

Sheskey and the other officers who were at the scene were put on administrative leave.
