Why darts were once the best weapons in Dungeons & Dragons

In Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, darts were the best weapons in the game, as Fighters could do a lot of damage with them in a single round.

The warriors of Dungeons and Dragons there is no problem in wielding the sword, spear or bow, but the most feared fighters were those who knocked down enemies with a pack of darts.

The fighters went through difficult times in the first editions of D&D. Paladins and Rangers had much more interesting skills on the battlefield, even though they came with stricter restrictions on alignment and race. Everything changed in the third edition of Dungeons and Dragons, where Fighters won a ridiculous amount of Talents, making them one of the most versatile classes in the game. Fighters continue to be a popular class in Dungeons and Dragons, which is partially helped by the fact that they are the most open when it comes to a character concept. Barbarians, Paladins and Rangers have certain archetypes built into their design, but Fighters can really be anything or anyone.

Darts also had an unimpressive history in D&D, as they were best known as one of the few weapons a magician could use in old editions of the game. Most magicians ignored the darts in favor of the staff or sling, however. What many players didn’t realize at the time is that the softer class could become extremely powerful when combined with the game’s most boring weapon. When fighters used darts in ADD, they have become a force to be reckoned with.

How D&D darts were really mastered

Inside Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, The fighters were the only class with the skill of weapon specialization, which allowed them to carry out more attacks per round than other warriors. The basic rules for darts say that three of them can be launched in a single attack, but a fighter who specializes in darts can launch up to six as they level up. Alone, the darts do only 1d3 damage, which is not much, but the Warriors add their Strength modifier to the hit. What if Dungeons and Dragons players are fortunate to have a fighter with 18/00 Strength, which means six additional points of damage per hit. The weapon specialization will add two more points of damage per dart, and a fighter under the effects of Hurry can attack twice per turn, which is a potential twelve darts per round. If the fighter can acquire some magic darts, they can further increase the damage.

Fans of fantasy literature and table RPGs have certain images in their mind when they think of powerful battles going on. People think of knights with swords and shields, samurai with katana, elves with bows and arrows and dwarves with axes. Darts are not the most glorious weapons to see in battle. In fact, they make fans think of pub games and drinking nights with their friends, not epic adventures. It is hard to imagine Gandalf defeating Balrog by throwing darts in his face. It is also difficult to challenge the results, and darts were an incredibly powerful weapon in the old days of Dungeons and Dragons, for those bold enough to use them.
