Kate Middleton reportedly tried – and failed – to contact Meghan Markle during one of the Duchess of Sussex’s most emotional moments as a royal worker.
The difficult period in question? Shortly after the premiere of the ITV documentary, Harry and Meghan: an African journey, which included an emotional interview with Meghan in which she admitted she was “not doing well” navigating life like royalty.
“Any woman, especially when she is pregnant, you are very vulnerable, and that was really challenging,” explained Meghan during the interview. “And so, when you have a newborn, you know. And especially as a woman … it’s a lot. So you add that in addition to just trying to be a new mother or trying to be a newlywed. It’s a .. . yes. I think, thanks for asking, too, because a lot of people didn’t ask if I’m okay, but it’s a very real thing to go behind the scenes. “
When interviewer Tom Bradby asked if it was fair to say that Meghan “was not well”, she simply replied, “yes”.
According to royal correspondent Rebecca English, at least two other members of the royal family contacted Meghan after the emotional interview, but her attempts to offer support were not well received.
“William was also deeply hurt by suggestions from the Sussex camp that he, and particularly his wife, had treated Meghan with a cold shoulder,” wrote English in a new column for the Daily Mail. “In fact, I heard that Kate – and the countess of Wessex – repeatedly “reached out” to the Duchess, especially after she expressed her unhappiness in a television documentary. But they were rejected. “
Meghan later clarified the statement during an interview for the Teen Therapy podcast in October 2020, explaining that she was exhausted, breastfeeding during the royal tour and about to bathe her son, Archie, who was five months old at the time.
“I didn’t think about that answer. I just answered honestly,” Meghan explained on the podcast. “I was in a moment of vulnerability, because I was tired, because there was no presentation. It was just, this is where I am: I am a mother with a baby of four and a half months and we are tired. But I think it resonated with people because everyone wants to be asked if they are okay. “
