David S. Compo, former president of the Southeast Michigan Home Builders Association, his wife Michele and son Dawson died in the accident when the plane they were flying crashed into a house on Saturday afternoon.
“There was a huge cloud of smoke, like very high flames,” said neighbor Chase Southwick. “We think the whole house would be gone.”
There was another family inside the house at the time of the accident who escaped without injury.
The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the three people on the plane, who have since been identified as the Compo family, have died.
The plane crashed just eight hundred meters from Oakland Southwest Airport. The family was returning from a trip to Canton, Georgia.
David is considered an experienced driver. His term as president of the Southeast Michigan Home Builders Association (HBA) recently ended on December 31, the organization said.
“We were lucky to have David leading our team in 2020,” said Michael Stoskopf, CEO of HBA. “His involvement, professionalism and experience over the years have been great assets for our organization and he has been a true friend to me as we have faced challenge after challenge for the past year.”
Dawson Compo recently graduated from Detroit Central Catholic High School and was a member of the band and cross country team.
“As a member of the 2020 Class, Dawson helped to set an incredible example of how to persevere in times of challenge and we will continue to rely on our faith and each other for support in this tragic time,” the school said in a statement released Sunday.
