Parcel control and a personal trainer helped me lose 150 pounds.

My name is Aillia Milsun (@aillia.sophia) and I’m 28 years old. I live in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and I am a registered nurse at Forsyth Medical Center. Focusing on controlling the plot and hiring a personal trainer helped me to lose 150 pounds and discover my best self.

I have been overweight for most of my life. In sixth grade, I weighed 227 pounds (more than I currently weigh 28). I lived a sedentary life as a child, eating mostly junk food, rice and pasta. I was tormented at school and also by my family. Because of bullying, for most of my life I tried to stay in the shadows to avoid being provoked. At 21, he weighed 340 pounds.

I was tired and out of breath the whole time. I also started taking blood pressure medication at age 19. I was ashamed to tell my family. I also had severe knee problems and foot pain from having to support my weight for so long. My mom is a type 2 diabetic, so I was worried that my lifestyle would eventually lead to me having the disease. I saw the price it cost her and I knew that with my weight I was putting myself at risk for health problems.

In 2012, I lost 150 pounds by changing my diet and activity, but I recovered after a traumatic experience.

I was living healthier for a while and finally found the love of my life. In 2016, he died tragically unexpectedly. It was the most difficult experience I have ever had. It was so hard to deal with, and with the stress of starting nursing school combined with pain, my weight went back up to 280 pounds in 2017.

I ate anything and everything because I didn’t care about life anymore. I was going through a very dark period and I was not happy with my life or who I had become. I realized, although I couldn’t control death, my weight and how I feel about myself were things I could to control. I had lost weight before and I knew I could do it again.

This was the beginning of not only my journey to lose weight, but also a journey of self-love.

I knew I needed to find a way to still enjoy the foods I like, but paying attention to the portions. When choosing a diet plan, you must do what is realistic for you. I know keto is important now, but it was an unreal diet for me. I’m Asian and I like rice and noodles. I couldn’t say not to carbs, but I couldn’t eat them in large portions like I used to. There is no more binge eating.

I realized that it wasn’t necessarily what I was eating, but how much I was eating in combination with an inactive lifestyle. Learning how to measure and control my portions was definitely difficult and difficult to learn. I am also a night nurse, but I found a feeding schedule that works for me.

Here’s what I normally eat in one day.

  • Breakfast: Green smoothie consisting of spinach or kale, frozen fruit and some yogurt. I add some eggs, boiled or scrambled, if I think I need more protein.
  • Lunch: Chicken or seafood with the vegetables I have in hand. For me, it’s usually green beans, asparagus or spinach.
  • Snacks: Avocado on multigrain toast, boiled eggs, pretzels or yogurt.
  • Dinner: If I’m at work, I’ll have a salad with some baked potato chips. If I’m at home, I’ll make another green smoothie or eat some leftovers from lunch, depending on how hungry I am or my level of activity during the day.
  • Dessert: I don’t like sweets very much. But when I do that, I usually have some frozen yogurt or high-protein ice cream in my freezer, which I can enjoy in moderation.

In my heaviest moment, even the most basic activities, like walking, were exhausting. I remember my physical education class in high school, I couldn’t even finish the mile! When I started working out with 340 pounds, I admit it was only because I was forced to take a gym class as a school requirement in college.

So, I started with basic aerobic exercises, like the exercise bike, but it was still a leap for not doing any exercise.

I started to explore different machines and increase my time and intensity. When the pounds started to drop, I was more motivated. In 2018, when I decided to regain control of my life, I was not at my ideal fitness level, but I came back immediately and learned to rebuild my strength.

I also have a coach, who is amazing! I currently train, on average, five days a week and see my trainer about two to three times a week. The gym has been very therapeutic for me and, in addition to losing weight, it has been a stress reducer and has helped my anxiety.

These three small changes had a big impact on my overall weight loss.

    • I am mentally committed to my goals. My first big change was to change my mindset. Whether for weight loss or any other change you want, if you are not emotionally committed, the change will not happen. I had to realize that if I didn’t want to be that person anymore, I was the only one who had the power to change the situation.

      • I have a coach. My second big change was getting a coach that I was comfortable with. My trainer pushes me and teaches me new conditioning exercises that keep my routine different. I used to do only aerobic exercise at the gym because that was all I knew how to do, but he encouraged me to do strength training that made me stronger than ever. Having a trainer is not necessary to lose weight, but it is certainly useful to have someone to motivate and hold you accountable for your goals.

        • I learned and committed to self-love. Learning to love myself throughout this process was a big change during this journey to lose weight. That part may be more difficult than the weight loss itself, but it is essential on the journey. You have to love yourself and believe in yourself to know that you are worthy and that you can do that.

This has been a battle of ups and downs for seven years. Recently (since 2018), I lost about 40 kilos. I’m still in progress, but I’m enjoying the journey.

I want women to know if you are not happy with your current situation, it is never too late. There is always a chance for change for those who are willing to strive. Okay, the journey is also imperfect. Life happens, but we have to get up and keep pushing.

I had a friend who said that if she gained weight back like I did, she would simply have stopped. I told her that the second time was really easier because I already knew I could do this. I lost weight once and could do it again. This time, I’m loving myself throughout the process. Weight loss is only half the process – the other half is learning to love yourself and your body along the way.
