RICHMOND, Va. (WDBJ) – The Virginia Department of Health is reporting 358,755 total cases of COVID-19 across the community on Saturday, January 2, 2021, dating from the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020. That is 3,989 in compared to 354,766 recorded on Friday, an increase less than the 5,182 new cases reported from Thursday to Friday.

4,337,939 PCR (polymerase chain reaction) tests were conducted in Virginia on Saturday, with a positivity rate of 14.8% in the past week, up from 14.3% reported on Friday.
On Saturday, there were 5,117 coronavirus-related deaths recorded in the community since the start of the pandemic, against 5,081 on Friday.
2,710 people across Virginia are hospitalized on Saturday with confirmed or pending COVID-19 testing cases, against 2,754 on Friday.
31,182 patients with COVID have been released from hospitals in Virginia since the pandemic began. This is according to the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association, which receives daily reports from hospitals across the community.
These hospital numbers are different from those reported by the HRD, which only collects hospitalization status at the time each case is investigated by the HRD and is a sub-representation of hospitalizations in Virginia.
Any new cases confirmed by health departments across the state for the rest of the day will not appear until at least the next day on the state list, as official figures are updated only once a day, with a cut at 5pm every day. for new cases to be reflected in the next day’s list.
