Arizona health leaders say hospitals may soon have to make tough decisions about treating patients with COVID-19 amid an increase in cases of coronavirus infection that are filling the intensive care units.
The largest chain of hospitals in the state, Phoenix-based Banner Health, has suspended elective surgery from Friday to free up treatment capacity for patients with COVID-19.
Banner Health’s clinical director says screening may be needed soon if the volume of cases continues to grow.
According to screening protocols, patients who are less likely to experience organ failure and more likely to live longer are placed first in line for treatment.
Arizona was the first state after the virus outbreak to adopt screening protocols for a period in July, before cases declined.
