The US marks 277,000 Covid cases in 24 hours, a new record

WASHINGTON: The United States saw on Saturday the highest number of coronavirus cases recorded in one day, with more than 277,000 infections.
The country hardest hit in the world by the pandemic, the United States recorded 20.4 million cases in total and just under 350,000 deaths.
Infections have been on the rise in recent months, with leading US government scientist Anthony Fauci warning a few days after Christmas that the worst of the pandemic may yet be ahead, taking the country to a “tipping point” while traveling on vacation spread the virus.
The country has failed in its efforts to crack down on Covid-19, with its vaccination program surrounded by logistical problems and overburdened hospitals.
More than 4.2 million people in the U.S. have already received their first jabs, with 13 million doses distributed, but that is well behind the 20 million vaccines that President Donald Trump’s government promised by the end of 2020.
