Nearly half of those polled in a recently released poll blamed Republican lawmakers and Senat majority leaders Mitch McConnell for Congress’ inability to agree to $ 2,000 stimulus checks.
The new survey, published on Friday by the left study center Data for Progress, revealed that 47% of the 1,166 people interviewed responded that “Republicans in Congress and Senator Mitch McConnell” were to blame for the delay in reaching consensus about checks.
In comparison, 32% said they were “Democrats in Congress and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi”. Only 15% of respondents said President Donald Trump was to blame.
After months of failure and stalled negotiations, lawmakers finally reached consensus on a new coronavirus aid package in late December. President Trump initially refused to sign the agreement, complaining about several provisions and asking Congress to include $ 2,000 stimulus checks, before finally signing the bill on Sunday. The signed account includes $ 600 stimulus checks.
After the bill was signed, House legislators voted on a separate bill to increase stimulus checks from $ 600 to $ 2,000. But the bill faces an obstacle in the Senate – McConnell recently rejected efforts to approve a stand-alone bill to increase stimulus checks, said Business Insider Oma Seddiq.
