The new Pokémon GO loading screen has a special meaning

As you may have noticed, Pokémon GO now has a new loading screen – just in time to start 2021 in style. We don’t usually write about loading screens, but this is a special occasion, considering how bad 2020 was. In fact, the back story of this loading screen is quite ingenious and unlike anything we had before.

A story of hope

Most Pokémon GO loading screens are themed pieces of art that highlight specific game events, periods or features that have just been released. Think of Halloween, or winter holidays, or Mega Raids.

However, the new loading screen is about hope. Jason Marino, the artist behind the loading screen, shared the entire background story on Twitter:

Jason’s explanation is divided into a series of tweets that we are sharing here below:

1) This new year’s @PokemonGoApp loading screen was something I HAD to do … Let me explain. # NewYear2021 #HAPPYNEWYEAR # Hello2021 # Welcome2021 #pokemongo #art

2) Painting a loading screen is not making a beautiful image or an excuse to embrace my inner nerd. Instead, it’s an outlet, to have a loading bar moment with you. A moment to bring something positive and, I hope, memorable. This year was a time to bring HOPE.

3) From the rising Phoenix to the passing storms. The light at the end of the tunnel and the beginning of a new journey (totally Pokémon Ep1). 2020 was a year that we would like to forget. I brought many “OMG!” moments and took us to some really low places.

4) As a person who has been through many things, I can safely say, with positive energy, hint of courage and a bucket full of hope, there is no dark place / obstacle that we cannot overcome!

5) So, I’m hopeful, there will be light at the end of this storm and, fortunately, this loading screen reminds you of that too. For everyone around the world, stay tuned and Happy New Year!

Our opinion

2020 was a difficult year for everyone. Needless to say, it will be remembered for many years to come. We are happy to see Pokémon GO recognize this, but we are happier with the fact that Niantic artists have enough creative freedom and agency to produce pieces like this.

Jason, we greet you for a wonderful wallpaper – it really hits home. Stay strong and safe, dear reader.
