MANASSAS, Virginia (WDBJ) – Police Chief Lee Carter formally announced on Friday his intention to run for governor of Virginia on the 2021 Democratic ticket.
Carter was elected to the House of Representatives in 2017. He introduced legislation to reform the workers’ compensation system, allow teachers to strike, repeal the anti-worker “right to work” law, legalize cannabis, end bail in cash and abolish the death penalty.
“For a long time, we heard career politicians and experts tell us that there is no other way,” said Chief Carter in his launch video. “But not anymore. In this primary, we can finally choose a governor who will fight for the rest of us.”
Governor Ralph Northam signed several bills introduced by Carter as law. This includes banning children’s magazines, establishing workers’ cooperatives as legal entities in the Community and a cap of $ 50 a month on co-payments for insulin products. The latter takes effect on Friday, January 1.
“For teachers and nurses. For shipbuilders and students struggling to pay tuition. For everyone with a stack of bills on the kitchen table waiting to be paid. I’m running for governor so that the rest of us can finally get what we need and deserve. “
