Nine nuns from a convent in upstate New York died of causes related to COVID-19 in just over a month.
The nuns lived in the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in Latham, according to the Albany Times Union.
“Four of the deaths associated with the congregation were reported earlier by hospitals earlier this month,” said Albany County Health Commissioner Elizabeth Whalen in a statement to the newspaper. “The other five were not reported to the Albany County Health Department by the unit.”
The convent is home to approximately 140 nuns, according to its website.
On December 11, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet said 22 of the sisters tested positive for coronavirus, according to a memo obtained by NBC affiliate WNYT.
In December, eight nuns from a Wisconsin convent died of COVID-19 complications in the same week; four of them died on the same day.
