Although the property was sold in March, just as the COVID-19 locks in Los Angeles were just beginning, it is only now that Reese Witherspoon’s stealthy acquisition of a Brentwood trophy complex has become public knowledge. The Oscar-winning actress who became a media mogul and her husband Jim Toth silently bowed and made their way to the bucolic estate, which happens to be one of Westside’s most private properties in LA.
This is not an exaggeration. The house is safely hidden in nature, within one of Brentwood’s best-known canyons, on a private road and behind a huge driveway that effectively protects the entire three-acre property from prying eyes. Behind the gate, a winding road leads to a formal circular lane next to the English country-style mansion, with its three-car garage.

Built in 1993, the house is “massive scale”, according to the list, and includes seven suites in more than 9,500 square feet of living space. Behind the stone-clad facade is a huge foyer with dark brown wood floors, dark brown ceiling beams and an elegant staircase that rises to a spacious landing. Public rooms include a living room equipped with a fireplace, a wood-paneled library, a formal dining room and a more intimate dining room next to the kitchen, where marble countertops and abundant stainless appliances – four huge ovens, nothing less – they will certainly impress any chef.
The upstairs master bedroom is best described as cavernous, with its vaulted ceiling almost touching the sky and a private sitting area larger than some living rooms. There are double main bathrooms, at least one with a built-in soaking tub and a large closet with built-in shelves. Elsewhere, on the upper level, there are four additional family rooms, as well as two suites for employees on the ground floor for resident helpers. Managing a property of this size, with a huge main house and acres of manicured land, requires the help of a well-oiled personal machine, of course.
Speaking of reasons, most rooms on the main floor have French doors that open to various parts of the gardens. The green and abundantly private garden is best described as park-like or idyllic. Squint and the extensive lawns and dozens of mature trees appear to have been touched by an angel, plus there is a full-size saltwater pool with spa and an outdoor kitchen serving the outdoor dining patios, some of them heated by a large outdoor fireplace.
It is no surprise that Witherspoon is looking for a new home, although she has not yet moved to this particular property. Last year, the “Legally Blonde” star went on a kind of sales spree, dropping his $ 17 million Pacific Palisades mansion to AutoZone heiress Robin Formanek and selling her charming Malibu ranch for $ 6, 7 million for real estate heiress Meg Haney. For now, however, she is still holding an elegant part-time home in Nashville, in her native Tennessee.
Hilton & Hyland’s Drew Fenton and Douglas Elliman’s Dena Luciano jointly owned the list; Tami Pardee and Matt Freeman of Halton Pardee and Partners represented Witherspoon.
