LIVE UPDATES: Florida confirms its first case of new coronavirus strain

Florida health officials confirmed the first case of a new coronavirus strain in the state.

The infected person was described as a Martin County man in his 20s with no travel history, the state Department of Health said on Thursday.

“The Department is working with the CDC on this investigation,” tweeted the department. “We encourage everyone to continue practicing COVID-19 mitigation.”

The first case of the new strain – called B.1.1.7 – in the United States was announced on Tuesday. Colorado health officials said an Elbert County man in his 20s was isolated after being infected. Since then, it has also been found in California.

The variant was discovered for the first time in the United Kingdom and generated severe blockage and travel restrictions.
