The New York MTA has finished rolling out contactless payments at all subway stations and bus lines in all five districts. The OMNY (One Metro New York) system allows passengers to tap and pay fares with smartphones, smartwatches and contactless credit and debit cards.

The MTA first introduced contactless payments last May, but it took more than a year and a half for the technology to make its way into the New York transit system. During that time, MTA saw more than 35 million taps using OMNY, said MTA’s executive director, Al Putre, in a press conference today. The next goal, he said, is to bring OMNY to the New York rail lines and introduce contactless OMNY cards, including reduced rate cards, to bring OMNY functionality up to the level of current MetroCard offerings.
