China is looking for new and modern methods in its patriotic education campaign, according to reports.
The focus on patriotic education has returned to focus, while China discusses how to deal with Hong Kong after the controversial manipulation of the extradition project that led to protests that lasted through 2019 and the national security law that revived the protests in early 2020 .
Teenagers and young adults led the attack in Hong Kong, with about 40% of the thousands of protesters arrested in 2019 registered as students.

The government responded by targeting younger age groups to begin their “education”, and the scope of that education is much broader than just Hong Kong residents.
China has implemented “sophisticated” programs that are “more blatantly nationalistic” than anything the government has tried in recent times, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The campaigns cover a range of tools, including social media programs and cartoons for children featuring rabbits in military hats that thwart the plots of an evil bald eagle.
“We need to take advantage of this critical period that determines and shapes teenagers’ values and guides them so that they can fix life’s first buckle,” explained President Xi Jinping at an August 2018 meeting, according to the WSJ.
An after-school teacher, Cua Chiu-fai, allegedly uses a YouTube channel with 114,000 subscribers to launch videos asking parents to pressure teachers to lose their license if they are suspected of fomenting protests and anti-government thinking. The government applauded Cua’s campaign and message.
“If you are a teacher and have your students destroy this place for certain so-called political posts, this is something that we absolutely cannot accept,” says a video, according to Reuters.
About 100 teachers and staff from primary and secondary schools were arrested as part of the protests.

The State Council, the Chinese cabinet, issued a 9,000-word document that includes instructions for government and party officials to promote the media and lessons that align with Xi’s vision of a rejuvenated China.
The Military Correspondent, a news agency sponsored by the People’s Liberation Army, urged the military to make greater use of social media platforms, citing them as “meeting places for younger users”.
A kindergarten in the city of Hangzhou added classes to what it called “military training”, with children, dressed in military uniforms, holding flags and greeting, according to the school’s official account on the social network WeChat.
The Hong Kong Department of Education said that “fostering students ‘sense of national identity” is a fundamental learning goal, with the aim of “improving students’ knowledge” about China’s history and culture.

“As well as their awareness of the importance of national security, thus developing a feeling of belonging to the country in them,” said the bureau, claiming that other nations are engaged in similar lesson planning.
