Senator David Perdue of Georgia is in quarantine after contacting someone who tested positive for Covid-19, his campaign said on Thursday, less than a week before the second round of the Republican election against Jon Ossoff.

Perdue, 71, was negative for the coronavirus, his campaign said.

His second round against Ossoff is one of two second rounds in Georgia that will determine whether Republicans or Democrats will have majority control over the U.S. Senate in 2021.

In the other race, current Senator Kelly Loeffler, Perdue’s Republican colleague, faces Democratic Reverend Raphael Warnock.

“This morning, Senator Perdue was notified that he had close contact with someone in the campaign whose test was positive for COVID-19,” Perdue’s campaign said in a statement.

“Senator Perdue and his wife were negative today, but following their doctor’s recommendations and according to CDC guidelines, they will be quarantined. The senator and his wife were tested regularly during the campaign, and the team will continue to follow CDC guidelines. More information will be provided when available. “

Perdue was scheduled to appear with Loeffler at a New Year’s campaign rally and show in Gainesville on Thursday afternoon.

In the last few days before Tuesday’s second round, Republicans have stepped up efforts to get votes, as data show that Democrats have taken advantage of their turnout.

President Donald Trump is scheduled to campaign in Georgia for Perdue and Loeffler on Monday.
