Oneida County reports a record 317 positive COVID tests in one day

Oneida County reported its highest number of positive test results in a single day on Wednesday, with hospitalizations also at a new record.

There were 317 new positive cases reported, and a total of 181 people in the hospital, with 167 of them admitted between the Mohawk Valley Health System and Rome Memorial Hospital. The other 14 are in hospitals outside the municipality.

The Mohawk Valley region had the highest rate of positivity in the state for several days, with the rate of 9.36% on Wednesday.

Oneida County executive Anthony Picente is reminding people to avoid meetings this weekend to help stem the spread.

“These are worrying numbers that reinforce the need for everyone to diligently follow the health and safety guidelines that we continue to emphasize each day. It should also serve as a reminder of how important it is to be smart on this day and New Year’s Eve and to avoid meeting with people outside your home to prevent the spread of this deadly virus, ”said Picente.

Nearly 12,000 people have tested positive in Oneida County since the pandemic began and nearly 5,000 have recovered. There are currently 5,231 active cases.

There are more than 7,500 people in quarantine or isolation.

A total of 221 COVID-related deaths have been reported.
