Walmart apologizes for tweeting Senator Hawley of Missouri

BENTONVILLE, Ark. (AP) – Walmart apologized on Wednesday for a tweet that called Republican Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri for contesting President-elect Joe Biden’s victory in the U.S. presidential election.

The now deleted tweet, “Go ahead. Get your 2-hour debate. #soreloser ”, was mistakenly sent by a member of the Walmart social media team who intended to post it on his personal account, the company said.

The hashtag #BoycottWalmart started to be a trend on Twitter shortly after appearing on the company’s official Twitter account.

The tweet was a response to Hawley’s announcement that he plans to raise objections next week, when Congress meets to assert Biden’s victory. The objections will not change the outcome of the election, but they may delay Biden’s certification of victory.

“We removed the post and have no intention of commenting on the issue of electoral college certification,” said Walmart in a prepared statement. “We apologize to Senator Hawley for this mistake and any confusion about our position.”

President Donald Trump said there was widespread election fraud and pressured Republican senators to support him. But the Electoral College has already consolidated Biden’s victory by 306-232 and several judicial challenges have been rejected or rejected.

Still, Hawley responded to Walmart with his own tweets on Wednesday, asking the company if it “would apologize for using slave labor” and for the “pathetic wages you pay your workers when taking family stores out of the market”.

Walmart and other major retailers like Target and Amazon pay well above the minimum wage set by the federal government.
