O Harrington Hotel released a statement on Monday, saying the hotel will close between Monday, January 4, and Wednesday, January 6, as Trump supporters plan to protest that Wednesday, when Congress is scheduled to certify the results of the election.
The hotel has informed that it will not host guests, except for long-term residents, and will refund all prepaid reservations made during that period.
“Washington, DC has been our home for 106 years and we join all of our guests, visitors, employees and neighbors in our concern and desire for everyone’s health and safety,” says the statement.
“We greatly appreciate the trust that our guests have placed at the Harrington Hotel over the years and look forward to continuing to earn that trust,” continues the statement. “While we cannot control what happens outside the hotel, we are taking additional steps to protect the safety of our visitors, guests and employees.”
Harrington Hotel announced it would close three days next week after The Washington Post published an article detailing how the Proud Boys have been meeting at the hotel in recent months. Several hundred members of the Proud Boys stayed at the hotel for the December 12 demonstrations that contest the election results.
The hotel bar, known as Harry’s, also had an influx of members of the Proud Boys, and its website said so will not work on January 5th and 6th. Harry’s closed in early December 11 and 12 due to concerns about how to manage the COVID-19 social detachment requirements, after being cited for violations when Trump supporters were visiting the bar.
The closure will come after the president predicted a “wild” protest in DC on Jan. 6 – the day Congress is expected to certify the president-elect. The expected demonstration will follow after Trump supporters took to the streets on the night of December 12, with many wearing helmets and bulletproof vests and shouting “F — antifa!” among other corners.
DC police worked to separate pro-Trump protesters from protesters near Black Lives Matter Plaza. When several members of the Proud Boys failed to break the police line, some caught and burned a Black Lives Matter banner of a church.
Clashes between groups of protesters resulted in at least four people being stabbed close to Harry, although the police have not revealed the political motivations of those involved, according to the Post.
Enrique Tarrio, who runs the Proud Boys, told the Post that members of the group had already stayed at the hotel and gone to the bar because of its proximity to the White House. But he said the group had grown a lot for the bar, as he said about 1,000 people attended the last demonstration.
Tarrio told the newspaper that the Proud Boys would not stay at the hotel or go to the bar if business asked the group to avoid them.
“Of course not. I would not like to go somewhere, a private business where I am not welcome,” he said. “There are many other options.”
Two hotel and bar staff told the Post that the Proud Boys’ presence at their workplace intimidated some of the workers, many of whom are black and Hispanic.
