Google particularly likes to put Easter eggs in its products – we recently saw a hot air balloon game on the Google Play Store, for example. While some of them are easy to discover, others need specific circumstances to be triggered. One of these Easter eggs is hidden in Android’s Smart Response feature and keeps you from being rolled.
If you’re lucky enough not to know what rick-roll that is, it is a catch that involves the unexpected appearance of the music video for Rick Astley’s 1987 song “Never Gonna Give You Up”. Ironically, YouTube was recently a victim of prank when he asked Twitter users to share their favorite 2020 videos.
The Smart Response Easter egg starts when someone sends you a link to the official video clip. As you can see in the image above, it automatically suggests “Don’t fall in love with it” and “You got me” as answers.
Mishaal Rahman recently discovered the feature on Twitter, but it looks like it has been around for some time – the first mention we could find was of a Reddit user more than 6 months ago. So, the next time you try rick-roll someone, make sure you don’t send the official video.
In related news, Google has just released a teaser of the Pixel 5 Pro that you can watch here.
