WARNING: This post contains spoilers for the plot and the end of Soul.
There’s a good chance that you watched the last Pixar movie Soul this weekend. (If not, you’re on Disney + now.)
If you did, you probably know how the film ends – with Joe (Jamie Foxx) returning to Earth after spending most of the film in “The Great Before”. But how Soul directors Pete Docter and Kemp Powers and producer Dana Murray told Entertainment Tonight that the film originally had a different ending.
“We kept going back and forth over the final until the last exhibition,” explained Murray. “For a long time, Joe went to The Great Beyond.”
“There was a lot of debate, but I think the more we saw him live his life and just think about his mother, Libba, and all these different factors, it seemed like the right ending, that he needed to be able to enjoy his life the way he wanted to. , because he learned a lot during the film.
Powers also revealed that the team played with multiple possible endings for the film.
“We have versions of the ending where Joe doesn’t return to the body, where he actually gets killed,” he explained. “We have versions of the ending where you see Joe on Earth a year later.”
Docter said there were “fields” within the film crew that had different views on how Soul was supposed to end – but they ended up falling into the final version of the film. Ah, the magic of collaboration.
