As the COVID-19 vaccine began to be distributed in the United States, Los Angeles County has developed a new way to allow its residents to prove that they have received the vaccine. Citizens can now add the COVID-19 vaccination voucher to the Apple Wallet app and Google Pay for Passes.
As reported by Bloomberg, this integration was possible thanks to a partnership between Los Angeles County and startup Healthvana, which specializes in delivering HIV test results and other sexually transmitted diseases to patients, and now the company does the same with the results of the COVID exams -19.
The main idea of the virtual ticket is to use it to remind people to take the second dose of the vaccine, in addition to certifying who has already taken both doses. However, as this ticket can be easily accessed over the phone, it also serves as proof that you have had the COVID-19 vaccine.
It will also give recipients a way to check whether they have been vaccinated, which can be placed in an Apple wallet or on Google’s competing platform “to prove to airlines, to schools, to prove to those in need,” said Healthvana CEO Ramin Bastani.
Last week, Los Angeles County broke its record for COVID-19 deaths, so it is doing everything it can to distribute vaccines “as quickly as possible,” said Claire Jarashow, director of disease-preventable control for vaccines from the county’s Department of Public Health.
Of course, for those unfamiliar with the technology, there is still a paper card to track the vaccines they have received. At the same time, there are concerns that this data will be stored online due to possible compromises of personal information, but Healthvana says the company stores everything as securely as possible on Amazon Web Services servers that comply with HIPAA.
