Steelers LB Alex Highsmith outperforms NFL against Colts

Pittsburgh Steelers debuting linebacker Alex Highsmith was put in an unenviable position this season when he had to replace Bud Dupree. When Dupree tore his ACL, Highsmith was cast in an initial role and no player wants to be the guy who replaces the guy.

Being 100% honest, Highsmith’s game during his first three NFL games was pretty much what you’d expect from a newcomer who came into the league with a few questions about his technique and level of competition.

But on Sunday, against the Indianapolis Colts, the Highsmith game took a big step forward. Upon returning and reviewing the game, it was nice to see Highsmith using a variety of pass-rush moves and, at the same time, having to face a team that worked hard to control football. Against Cincinnati Bengals, Highsmith made some expensive reading mistakes in racing games and seemed lost at times.

Highsmith ended the game with seven tackles in total and two quarterback strokes. He hasn’t hit a bag since he took the starting point, but you see him approaching. Highsmith played with a great level of energy and although he may never be the player that Dupree is, it was great to see his game take another step on Sunday.
