More than 190,000 ceiling fans sold at The Home Depot were revoked after it was discovered that their blades could come loose while rotating, causing injuries and material damage.
Hampton Bay’s 54-inch Mara Indoor / Outdoor fans were sold in stores and online from April to October this year, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. About 182,000 of the fans were sold in the United States and about 8,800 were sold in Canada, he said.
There were 47 reports of blades standing out from the fans. Two of these episodes involved loose blades hitting people, and there were four reports of blades causing material damage. It was not clear whether the people affected by the blades were injured.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission said the recall involved fans in matte white, matte black, black and polished nickel finishes. He instructed consumers to stop using the fans immediately, adding that if they notice “uneven movement of the blades or spaces between the blades and the fan body”, they should contact the fan distributor, King of Fans, for a free replacement.
The problem was attributed to an “isolated manufacturing defect,” said King of Fans in a statement to consumers last week. King of Fans said the problem did not affect all of Mara’s 54-inch fans and provided a link to a video instructing consumers on how to determine if the product was defective.
“We are proud of the quality of our products and the safety of our customers is our priority,” he said.
The Home Depot did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
